The Psychology and usage of colors

Color plays a major role in our world. Everything you see around you is applied by different colors. So, color psychology is important to designers. Wrong usage of colors may not only make your design ugly but also cause delivering the wrong message. So, here is my guide of using colors in design.

Warm Colors

Warm colors contain red, orange and yellow. Warm colors represent days or light. So, you may use them in wisdom, inviting, happiness, warming, delicious, energizing, and so on.

Red is the hottest and most dynamic color. It’s activating, stimulating, passionate, exciting, powerful and expanding. Red is been using to design love or heart, hot stuffs like fire and meanings like target or ambition.

Red is strong, and very basic. Pure red is the simplest color, with no subtlety.

You can use minimally in its purest form as an ascent to draw attention to critical elements and for depicting designs that portray power or passion.
But you need to note that red color also represent anger and sexual passion.

Orange is a balanced color that is vibrant and energetic while being friendly and inviting. But it’s not as overwhelming as red. It focuses our minds on issues of physical comfort - food, warmth, shelter etc. - and sensuality. It is a 'fun' color.

You can use orange color to give a friendly and inviting impression. You can also use for designs depicting movement and energy without being overpowering.

Orange also has a negative color meaning, it is a sign of pessimism and superficiality.

Yellow is the brightest and most energizing of warm colors. It represents happiness, warmly, stimulating and expansiveness. It is also the color of confidence and optimism

You can use yellow to give an impression of happiness and cheerfulness. In its pure form, yellow can be used for designs concerning children, while darker shades can be used to give a sense of antiquity.

However, please note that yellow can also suggest impatience, criticism and cowardice.

Cool Colors

Cool colors contain green, blue and purple. Cool colors are symbol of cold, environment and nature, security, nobility, business and spirituality.

This cool color is calming, balancing, and rejuvenating. Green also represents stability, and inspires possibility. It can be used in designing natural forests, money or recycling.

Green is been using to represent balance and harmony in a design and darker shades to represent stability and affluence.

Blue is the color of mind, sky and sea. It represents dependability, trustworthiness, security, calm and spirituality. It’s also often associated with depth and stability.

Dark blues are excellent for corporate and business designs. Lighter blues can be used for social websites that represent friendliness.
Negative suggestions are conservatism and frigidity.

Purple represent nobility, abundance and dignity, but can also stand for creativity and imagination. It is also highly introversive and encourages deep contemplation, or meditation.

Darker shades characterize wealth and luxury. Softer shades can be associated with spring and romance.

Purple also negatively represents immature and impractical.

Black and White

Black represents power, elegance and modernity. It can also characterize mysteriousness. It keeps things bottled up inside, hidden from the world.

White is the color of perfection. It represents clarity, cleanliness, hope and openness. It can also be associated with sterility and simplicity.
