The Guide of Social Media Images for designers

Here is the ultimate guide of social media images for designers. I added the most popular social networks like Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter and Google+.

Facebook

Profile Picture: Profile picture is the first impression of your social media page. This square photo will appear on your timeline layered on over your cover photo. It will also appear when you post on other walls, comment on your posts or when you’re searched with Facebook’s Open Graph.

Image size must be at least 180 x 180 px but image will appear with the size 160 x 160 px. And photo thumbnail will appear throughout Facebook at 32 x 32 px.

Cover Photo and Shared Images: Cover photo will appear on page with the size of 851 x 315 px. Any smaller size will be stretched. Minimum size is 399 x 150 px. And you should upload an RGB JPG file that is less than 100 Kb for best result but images with a logo or text may be best as a PNG file. Shared Images is the same with the cover photo’s properties but the best size to upload is 1200 x 900 px.

Shared Link: When you shared a link on your page or profile, Facebook will automatically create a preview of the images and text by taking information of the link you shared. Recommended image size to upload on the link is 1200 x 627 px. Facebook will scale photos under the minimum dimensions.

LinkedIn

Standard Logo: One of the two brand logos that you should be uploading to Linkedin is the business logo. This is the bigger of the two and is going to show up right next to your brand name on your Linkedin homepage. This image also appears in the “Companies you may want to follow” section. Image size is 100 x 60 px and will be resized to fit. Maximum upload size is 2MB and must be a PNG, JPG or GIF file.

Career Cover Photo: At the top of the page sits a banner that is bigger than any of the other images on Linkedin. You can use this space to choose a picture that speaks to your company in order to attract some great potential employees. Minimum upload size is 974 x 300 px and maximum file size is 2MB. The layout of the image must be landscape and file type must be JPG, PNG or GIF.

Banner Image: Banner image is one of the newest and most prominent of the images that you can use on Linkedin. This image appears when a user visits your brand’s homepage. Since this image is located on your homepage it’s likely the visitor is actively searching for your brand, so use this opportunity to reel them in with a great image. Minimum upload size is 646 x 220 px and maximum file size is 2MB. The layout is also landscape.

Square Logo: This is the brand image that shows up when your company is searched. Make sure you use something recognizable to your brand to make sure customers know which company they want to click on. Size of the image is 150 x 50 px and it will be resized to fit. Masimum upload size is 2MB and JPG, PNG or GIF format.

Instagram

Profile Image: Profile image is your first impression to your audience. It appears on your home page at 110 x 110 px. It must be a square photo and need to make sure to maintain an aspect ratio of 1:1.

Photo thumbnails: The thumbnails will appear on the page at 161 x 161 pix. Also need to be a square photo and ratio of 1:1.

Photos: The size of instagram photos has been increased to 640 x 640 px. Instagram still scales these photos down to 612 x 612 pix. And photos will appear in the feed at 510 x 510 pix.

Twitter

Profile Photo: Twitter profile photo is also first impression of a brand or a profile, so be creative and attractive. The image must be square and recommended size is 400 x 400 px. Image will be displayed as 200 x 200 px on Twitter. Maximum file size is 100 KB and format must be JPG, PNG or GIF.

Header Photo: Header photo appears at the top of the profile when someone visits to it. Recommended size is 1500 x 500 px. Maximum file size is 10MB so you may upload high resolution image.

In-stream photo: Size of the photo differs according to the audience’s device or screen resolution. Minimum size to appear is 440 x 220 px and maximum is 1024 x 512 px. I recommend uploading 440 x 220 px size image. Maximum file size for photos is 5MB and for animated GIF is 3MB.

Google+

Profile Image: You upload your image in a square format, and then going render it into your page as a circle, so make sure you choose a photo doesn’t cut out your best side. Recommended uploading size is 250 x 250 px and it will be resized to 120 x 120 px. Maximum size is not listed that I tried to upload 20MB photo at 5200 x 5200 px and it worked.

Cover Image: The google plus cover image is the biggest photo on your page, so choose your photo wisely. It’s a great opportunity for you to showcase a product or service your brand offers, or may be choose an image that reflects the beliefs of your company. Recommended upload size is 1080 x 608 px. Minimum is 480 x 270 px and maximum is 2120 x 1192 px.

Shared image: There are two kinds of shared image on google+, in the feed and on the right side of the page. The former one appears in home stream and on page at a width of 426 px. The height of the image is scaled. Minimum width is 497 px and maximum uploading size is 2048 x 2048 px. Thumbnail size of the shared link is the same size with the shared image which appears on the right side, 150 x 150 px.
